Mediation Style:
Leo Hughes is a patient and diplomatic mediator. He listens carefully to all participants and helps them focus on achieving satisfactory settlements. Mr. Hughes has helped mediation participants resolve a wide variety of disputes.
Suggested Preparation for Mediation:
In domestic mediations, Mr. Hughes believes that one of the keys to success is to prepare two or three "scenarios" for division of property. Mr. Hughes can supply the parties with a flexible spreadsheet that allows them to divide assets and liabilities in various ways resulting in an equitable division. Up-to-date financial information on retirement accounts, property values, home refinancing and the like is essential. He usually asks the parties to let him know in advance of any special circumstances.
In civil mediations, Mr. Hughes invites the participants to submit in advance whatever information they feel comfortable disclosing to him confidentially. If substantial sums are involved and the parties have narrowed down the legal issues through discovery, Mr. Hughes finds that mediation briefs submitted in advance are the best way to focus on the relevant facts and legal issues for purposes of settlement.
Successful Results:
Mr. Hughes is most satisfied by mediations that start out with the parties declaring that they do not wish to settle which slowly make progress to the point that the parties can see that it is in their best interest to settle. Invariably, Mr. Hughes belives, there is a turning point -- a new idea or perspective from the parties themselves -- that renders settlement possible. These mediations are usually physically and mentally demanding, but helping the parties see their way through to a solution is very satisfying.
Hourly Rate Per Party:
| 2-Party Case | 3-Party Case | 4-Party Case |
| $75.00 | $50.00 | $37.50 |
The cost of mediation is split equally among all parties unless otherwise agreed in writing. In most cases, your cost for mediation is simply your share of your mediator's hourly fees. See FAQ: How Much Mediation Costs.
